The Dual Role of Gods in The Iliad With even a cursory exposure to antique Greek texts, it is obvious that the gods and goddesses are very historic in traditional Greek culture. As literary figures in mythos and specific poetry and drama, the gods dabble in the life of man, predict his fate, and routinely thwart both attempt for him to entirely forge his own future. But for those of us who are not extensively schooled in antiquities, it is hard to pinpoint exactly what the gods are to the ancient Greeks, and what they are to us as subscribers of literature who live outside the culture. Were the gods accepted as parable figures, meant to instruct? Were they used to explain acts of nature? Do they without delay belong to anything outside the scope of literary history? Rather than speculate about the role of gods in all of Greek culture, it is more than manageable to aroma at one specific text and determine the role its gods play within its world. In The Iliad, the gods are an integral part of the poem. Their foibles and fickleness recall for the reader the humanness of the Greek gods, and spark a mental association of men to myths. This makes the long-dead warriors more real to anyone who reads the poem. But the gods of The Iliad also inculcate what could be nothing more than a dry account of a historical war that no one recorded while it was happening. This historical-cultural piece, one that connects the events of that unwritten war to readers by wrench the past into the present, make the old archetypes oddly modern and applicable to the present day world and its men. In serving Henry VIII, he would be serving God. Or so he could allow himself to think, until Henry demanded he swear an reprobation acknowledging the king to be the supreme authority on all matters temporal and spiritual, thus severing the English churchs ties with Rome (Rubin). Love in The brilliance of Being EarnestLove is possibly the most actively sought righteous objective of ones life. And though marriage is often thought to be the logical consequence of love, it is Oscar Wildes contention in his satire, The Importance of Being Earnest, that love begets bliss and marriage thwarts this course of bliss. Algernon Moncrieff spends very little time falling in love and the rest of the time striving toward engagement. Wilde demonstrates through him that once one becomes intent upon achieving a goal, the individuals motivation becomes a matter of action rather than truth. Algernon is no longer driven by a moral objective instead, he becomes intent upon achieving a societal standard. The truth is rarely pure, and never simple (35). Love is truth. Marriage results in the systematic complication of love. Algernon becomes let down in the process of seeking truth. In defining Algernons preconceived notion of marriage and then describing the subsequent earnest pursuit of engagement, Wilde achieves a consequential mop up that satirizes marriage. Algernon is a pompous man of seemingly strong, albeit unconventional, convictions. Wilde uses him for the sole purpose of mocking the sanctimonious institution of marriage. In the beginning of the play, Algernon considers Jacks intent to propose to Gwendolen to be business, not pleasure (30). Yet eventually Algernon also resolves to propose to Cicely, discrediting his own established belief I really dont see anything amative in proposing. It is very romantic to be in love.
